This role will assist individuals with disabilities who may be facing abuse in residential settings. This role is vital in ensuring that these individuals receive compassionate support, advocacy, and intervention to improve their living conditions and safeguard their rights. Key Responsibilities: • Advocacy and Support: Act as an advocate for residents, ensuring that any signs of abuse are reported and addressed promptly. Work closely with management and external agencies to safeguard the rights and well-being of individuals. • Crisis Intervention: Respond to incidents of abuse or crisis situations with sensitivity and professionalism, employing de-escalation techniques and coordinating with healthcare professionals as necessary. • Skill Development: Empower residents by developing skills that promote self- advocacy and independence, using personal experience and professional training to provide effective support. • Reporting and Documentation: Maintain thorough and confidential records of interactions, incidents, and progress, ensuring compliance with privacy and reporting regulations • Compliance and Safety: Uphold strict compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation

Please note : this is a 1 year contract with 8-16 hours which ends in March 2026. However, there may be an opportunity for renewal of the contract.

Job Requirements

1. At least 6 months experience as a person with disability, with a strong understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, especially those experiencing abuse. 2. Tertiary Diploma – Certificates Level 4 or above in Support Worker. However, if you have a passion for the role, NCEA high school certificate will be considered along with experience. 3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, crisis management capabilities, and resilience. 4. Personal Qualities: High empathy, patience, and reliability, with a proven commitment to advocacy and ethical care. 5. Must have your own reliable vehicle and Restricted or a Full license at the time of application to travel to residential centres. Travel will be paid. 6. Must disclose all convictions as they will be considered on case-by-case basis. 7. Must be computer literate and familiar with using email, MS Word and Spreadsheets. 8. If you speak more than 1 language, it will be an advantage.
