A modern and vibrant provincial pub in the heart of Matamata is seeking an experienced Sous Chef to join their talented kitchen team. The ideal candidate will have the expertise and leadership skills to step up and support the Head Chef, ensuring smooth kitchen operations in their absence.
Key Responsibilities: • Prepare and serve high-quality food that meets company standards • Collaborate with the Head Chef in menu development and recipe creation • Oversee kitchen team sign-on and sign-off, ensuring efficient shift management and that wage cost targets are met • Maintain strict quality control during food preparation and service • Enforce Health & Safety compliance during shifts to ensure a safe work environment • Complete Food Safe Pro duties and adhere to food safety protocols • Manage stock orders, receiving, and inventory control to reduce waste and ensure adequate supplies • Control portion sizes and manage food costs to optimize profitability • Communicate effectively with the Head Chef and General Manager on kitchen operations and any issues • Train and mentor new kitchen team members, encouraging continuous skills development • Complete HR-related forms, including sick leave, accidents, and uniform requirements • Follow company policies, recipes, and ensure consistency in food preparation and presentation • Be available to work days, nights, weekends, and public holidays as required

Job Requirements
• NZ Level 5 Cookery Diploma & Food Hygiene Certificate (preferred) • Minimum of 2 years’ kitchen experience in a similar role • Strong communication and interpersonal skills • Reliable, professional, and able to work well within a team • A positive attitude, strong work ethic, and the ability to lead by example • Convictions considered on a case-by-case basis
