Gardener / Coordinator

A local community garden is seeking a motivated, reliable and hardworking gardener/coordinator. This role requires working in the garden preparing the soil, planting seeds in the hothouse or shade house, weeding, mowing, landscaping and so on. Further aspects of the role require building relationships and sharing knowledge within the community, including the local primary school, volunteers etc. The goal is to provide food sustainability for the community of Raumanga drawing on the values of the organisation which include connecting, contributing and collaborating.

Important to understand the requirements:

• Must be able to work with local school and be police vetted with a clear record. • Reliable and good work-ethic to be able to work independently, and with others as required. • Enjoy gardening and working hard in the garden. • Be a team player, to help coordinate community volunteer ideas and support their involvement and engagement. • Be able to connect with our community and people from different cultural/lifestyle backgrounds, in a friendly, nonjudgmental way. • Ideally would be prepared to prepare kai (budget allowed - within allocated paid hours, ) to build whanangatanga with community, volunteers, businesses, and those donating goods and services. • Be able to help communicate and coordinate with volunteers when community gardening/event days are planned and be a part of our volunteer monthly meeting (Typically on the first Wednesday in the month from 5.30pm-7pm). • Be able to post updates and pictures on Facebook. • Be reliable to update the shared communication book, to outline garden work and planned work, so the team of volunteers can stay up to date, even when they might not be in the garden at the same time. • Be able to work some flexible hours to accommodate gaps when volunteers unavailable.
