One of New Zealand's largest cut flower growers in Puni is seeking a skilled and motivated Grower’s Assistant to join their team on a full-time permanent basis. The crops are grown in a glasshouse with hi-tech climate-controlled conditions.

As the Grower’s Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the cultivation and production of high-quality flowers. Working under the Grower, you will be involved in the growth, maintenance, and harvesting of cut flowers (roses & gerberas).

This position requires attention to detail, a willingness to learn, a passion for cultivating high-quality flowers and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic horticultural environment.

Key responsibilities include: - Assisting in the daily care of cut flower crops including watering, fertilizing, pruning, and pest management. - Working closely with the Grower, Resourcing and Processing Manager to execute the production plans to ensure production meets demand forecasts. - Generating ideas for optimizing resources and maximizing efficiency. - Working with Resource Manager and Sales & Despatch to manage and maintain accurate inventory records of plant stock, supplies, and equipment, and help with inventory control procedures. - Supporting glasshouse operations such as monitoring environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, light levels), adjusting irrigation systems, and maintaining proper ventilation. - Assisting with glasshouse and packhouse operations, including picking, spraying, budding, processing and grading flowers - Aiding in the propagation process by sowing seeds, taking cuttings, and transplanting seedlings to promote healthy plant growth. - Participating in the harvesting process by selecting and cutting flowers at the optimal stage of maturity, ensuring proper handling and post-harvest treatment to maintain freshness and quality. - Performing routine maintenance tasks on machinery and equipment used in the production process to ensure operational efficiency and safety. - Collaborating with the Grower and other relevant roles within the business to inspect crops for signs of disease, pests, or other abnormalities, and take corrective actions as needed to maintain crop health and quality standards. - Ensuring compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements, including industry standards e.g maintenance of GAP certification/qualification, environmental regulations, and labour laws. - Working closely with other members of the growing team to accomplish daily tasks, share knowledge and expertise, and contribute to a positive work environment.

Job Requirements

- Have an up-to-date CV - Able to pass a pre-employment Ministry of Justice check and drug test - Willingness to work flexible hours (on-call alternate weekends), including weekends (picking) and holidays, as required. - 5 years’ glasshouse growing experience or hold a Level 4 or higher Horticultural Certificate - Have previous people management experience in the horticulture industry as you will be looking after an existing team of 12. - A Grow Safe Certificate in Pesticide Application or knowledge of integrated pest management practices and/or a Forklift Certificate is a plus. - Hold a restricted or full Class 1 driver licence with reliable transport - Basic understanding of plant biology and horticultural practices. - Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team. - Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate with colleagues. - Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality workmanship. - Physical stamina and the ability to perform tasks that may require lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.

Days of work
Monday to Friday 7:30am to 4:30pm, and every second weekend half day, with day in lieu the following week. (40 hours per week)

$28.00 to $34.00 per hour, based on experience.
