We’re looking for a compassionate Kaiarahi who can walk alongside whanau, providing wraparound support that strengthens wellbeing, stability, and whanau connections. Applying a Tikanga Maori approach, you’ll build trust, advocate for whanau, and help them achieve their goals while navigating housing, social, and cultural challenges.
The primary purpose of the Housing First Kaiarahi role is to work with whanau who are permanently housed in the He Herenga Kura Housing First portfolio. The Housing First Kaiarahi are our frontline staff who apply a kaupapa Maori lens to support whanau with the effective delivery of wrap around services. The Housing First Kaiarahi establish excellent communication with whanau, and have the willingness and aptitude for applying reflective listening, and responsive and receptive solutions that address the demands and complexities of: - working with whanau Maori who may be considered to be vulnerable or ‘high risk’; - working in a team who cover a breath of experience and needs across a diverse range of housing, social and cultural issues impacting whanau Maori.
What you’ll do: • Provide holistic, whanau-centred support and advocacy. • Connect whanau with health, social, and education services. • Support tenancy stability through guidance and regular check-ins. • Work collaboratively with internal teams and external partners. • Identify risks, maintain accurate records, and ensure safe practice.

Job Requirements
Essential: • Experience working in te ao Maori / tikanga Maori environments. • Strong knowledge of kaupapa Maori frameworks and Maori social structures (whanau, hapu, iwi). • Understanding of social, health, and mental health services. • Proven ability to build and manage relationships with whanau and partner agencies. • Excellent communication, time management, and organisational skills. • Skilled in risk assessment, boundary setting, and managing complex situations. • Proficient in Microsoft Office and client management systems. • Must be able to pass MOJ check. • Must have updated current CV and cover letter
Desirable: • Experience engaging and facilitating with rangatahi / youth. • Knowledge of relevant legislation (Oranga Tamariki, Residential Tenancy, Mental Health, Family/Youth Court). • Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, decolonisation, and social housing issues. • Experience with contract management and Recordbase software. • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
