Junior In-House Designer – Boat Building

A leading Invercargill-based aluminium boat manufacturer is seeking a Junior In-House Designer to join their expanding team. This position supports the design and development of high-performance aluminium trailer boats and offers hands-on experience within both recreational and commercial marine environments. The successful candidate will work closely with senior designers, naval architects, the production manager, and workshop teams to help produce accurate 3D models, technical drawings, and manufacturing documentation. This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about boats, marine engineering, and practical design who is ready to grow their skills in a dynamic, highly experienced team.
Key Responsibilities: - Assist in creating and modifying 3D boat models using CAD software - Produce detailed workshop drawings for hull structures, plate development, framing, and assemblies - Support nesting and plate optimisation for CNC cutting - Prepare production-ready drawings and documentation packs - Assist with design revisions and engineering change processes - Collaborate with fabrication and welding teams to ensure accurate translation of drawings into production - Contribute to R & D activities and new model development - Assist with weight calculations, material take-offs, and component specifications - Liaise with suppliers for hardware, fittings, and component requirements - Maintain well-organised digital filing and revision systems - Ensure compliance with relevant marine standards and internal quality processes

Job Requirements
- Strong interest in boat building, marine engineering, or product design (qualification advantageous) - Experience or working knowledge of 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, Fusion 360) - Ability to produce accurate 2D drawings from 3D models - Understanding of aluminium fabrication processes, including plate and pontoon construction - Basic knowledge of CNC cutting and nesting principles - Strong spatial awareness and exceptional attention to detail - Good mathematical ability and understanding of tolerances - Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications - Strong problem-solving skills and a practical mindset - Clear written and verbal communication skills - Willingness to spend time in the workshop to understand real-world production - Physically fit and comfortable in a manufacturing environment - Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test and Ministry of Justice check - Restricted Class 1 driver licence (minimum) and reliable transport

- Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, with occasional overtime during peak production periods. (40 hours per week)
