J & D Adolph Ltd, a Northland Kumara growing and lamb finishing business is looking for an Assistant Manager. The company produces the red, purple and Beauregard Kumara varieties and finishes around 2,200 lambs during the winter. The business farms 160 hectares 10 min from the Dargaville town centre and employs around 35 plus locals and backpacker’s peak season.

The Assistant Manager role is highly varied, beginning the season with managing and hands on construction of plant propagation beds, moving into managing a group of tractor operators during spring, operating a sophisticated irrigator during summer, then assisting supervising a good-sized team of workers at harvest. Afterward, onto farm and machinery maintenance and sheep work over winter. To have a desire to work with sheep and care for their wellbeing.

An understanding of how to repair and maintain machinery is desirable. Such as tractor and implement servicing, diagnosing problems and fitting new parts. Some experience with metal work could be of benefit.

A willingness to work with, implement, and maintain systems in the workplace is required. This includes NZGAP, health and safety processes, and LEAN farm management systems and processes. Following, supervising and helping to develop health and safety protocol.

For health and safety reasons drug testing needs to be undertaken.

Spraying experience and having a Grow Safe Certificate could also be beneficial. The right, trustful candidate may have the option to have highly flexible work hours during off-season once fully trained.

Hands on training provided to upskill and learn best growing practices, mechanical skills, welding, human resources from a well-established but family run horticulture business.

Numerous schools are nearby as is Ripiro Beach and the Kaipara Harbour with good fishing and outdoor activities.

A quality three-bedroom house is available for rental on site if required also.

Will also consider applicants from outside the horticultural/agricultural industry if they have relevant transferable skills.

Job Requirements

The requirements for the position are: Experience with tractor operation with a range of implements to a good level. The irrigator and other machines we have are complex and require good machinery operation aptitude to avoid problems.

Skill and experience with training of new and inexperienced staff up to a high and consistent standard.

Good problem-solving skills and the desire to take on responsibility.

Leadership experience and good communication skills are required to be able to train, manage and lead large teams of staff from a wide range of socio economic, cultural, and employment backgrounds.

Time management, delegation and prioritisation skills

Be flexible in willing to work outside of the hours of 8-5 if required to.

Days of work
M-S 8-5 pm typically. Must have the flexibility to work outside of these hours if required. (50 hours per week)
