Educator – Marsden Valley Education Centre, Shantytown approx 20 hours a week
Marsden Valley Education Centre a Ministry of Education funded initiative to provide an “Enriched Learning Curriculum” (ELC). West Coast based and non-West Coast based School classes visit Shantytown throughout the year for part day, full day and overnight camps receiving education programmes that are hands on, practical experiences that cannot normally be undertaken in the standard classroom. This is a great opportunity for someone to join the educators team to provide hands on teaching, programme delivery, programme creation and to ensure the Centre’s programmes remain relevant, exciting, challenging and sought after. You will work alongside and within an operating museum and tourist attraction to the need exists to undertake the teaching role within a public environment daily. Key tasks are: -Co-ordinate and prepare class activities in conjunction with the Centre Coordinator /Lead Educator -Deliver programs by teaching in the style promoted by the Centre -Be comfortable at teaching in a role play environment based in a late 1800’s context -Contribute ideas to improve existing programs and provide ideas for new activities -Ensure all students are provided with the learning intentions as required by the visiting class -Research and deliver the topics requested -Assist with overnight camps (some evening work) -Promote and maintain good relations with staff, parents and helpers from visiting schools -Liaise regularly with Shantytown staff in areas of train, gold claim and functions/cafe -Undertake required administrative tasks e.g. creation of materials, PR, costuming & work plans -Maintain and account for Centre assets and ensure a safe working environment -Attend workshops and professional development opportunities
Key Attributes: - Outstanding communication skills across the Board, students, teachers, public and tourists -Enjoy working with people of all ages and can engage and hold their interest -Is prepared to work in a variety of situations and in all weathers -Can respond quickly to the needs of various groups and adapt their presentation accordingly -Energy, enthusiasm, and innovation to easily contribute ideas to improve services and the range of programs delivered -A team player -Social media savvy -IT proficient work, excel, publisher, e-diary and e-mail, databases and google doc -Must hold a clean NZ drivers’ licence -Expertise in or knowledge of any of the following: local history, geology, science, social studies, local flora and fauna, Maori customs and traditions, NZ Education curriculum or any other skills which might contribute to the service -A passion for education and history
